HELP! How to Organize a Protest?

I am planning to organize a protest to get bike lanes put in on a Major Blvd. in my city. Many people have been hit biking on this street and it has become dangerous for bikers. We are planning to ride in the middle of the road for a 2 hours in the morning to raise awareness and support to get bike lanes put in. How do you organize a protest? We are located in California. We have already notified many of the leading environmental and transportation groups in our area.
