What is meant by the terms "kettle scale" and "boiler scale"?

Scale is the deposition of dissolved minerals from hard water. "Hard" water contains salts of higher valence cations such as Ca and Mg. The salts are usually carbonates because of carbon dioxide in the air, which forms carbonic acid, which in turn, dissolves minerals. The problem of scaling is worse in boilers because in these devices the minerals are concentrated.
