What happened to the 'global overpopulation concerns' raised during the 90s?

The worlds population doubles approximately every 40 years. Even someone from the religious right should be able to figure out that this can not go on much longer. Someone born today, when they reach age 80 will live in a world with 24 billion people on it. I sure hope someone somewhere is doing something about it.
