Do females Stop Themselves from progressing in America?

Why is america not ready for a female president? Why has there never been one? Hilary Clinton was a serious candidate for the democratic party, but half way through the race, the female support switched from her to Obama???? Chances are she could have beat mccain, but women didn't vote for her.... do females shoot themselves in the foot?
